Let me start at the beginning for those who have not heard this sad tale
before. Bought a Beige 266 Mhz G3 off Ebay (final rev mobo). It came with
96 Mb of RAM and a Fujitsu 3.2 Gb HD with OS 9.2.2 installed. Came with a
standard sound card and I bought a Wings AV card for it. Meantime I
installed the mobo, drives and Wings card in a standard PC ATX case. Took
out the 3.2 Gb HD and installed a 20 Gb Maxtor HD. Installed OSX (10.2.8
after update) and more RAM (now 160 Mb). Seemed to work fine. Downloaded
and installed several programs which all seemed to work pretty well. Bought
another item, a Trios II multi HD selector and was going to use it to boot
from one of three HDs. Got all the HD's installed along with the Trios
hardware and could only boot from the 20 Gb HD with OSX. Along the line in
playing with this device, I could not get the computer to boot any longer
with any HD. Figured something with the G3 would not let it work with this
device and removed it. I left all three HDs physically installed in the
case, but just hooked up the primary (for lack of better term) IDE cable to
one drive at a time to see if I could get the computer to boot. No go.
Thanks to the suggestions from this list I reset the P-RAM and was finally
able to boot from the small 2 Gb HD with OS 8.5 on it. Later on I got it to
boot with the 3.2 Gb HD with OS 9.2.2 on it. And then I hooked up both the
OS 8.5 HD (set to master) and the OS 9.2.2 HD (set as slave) and could boot
from either one by using the Control Panel to select the startup drive. Next
I tried the OSX HD all alone on the IDE cable and could not get it to boot.
Tried all kinds of different setups with one of the 2 drives which would boot
and the OSX drive, but at no time could I get the OSX drive to boot. The
drive setup in the utilities folder would find the drive, but it always said
it was not mounted. I finally booted from the OSX CD and ran the verify and
repair options, there was a folder messed up but it repaired just fine. It
still will not boot nor can I mount the drive with 2 drives hooked up. I
hate to lose all the stuff I downloaded and installed on the OSX HD so how
can I either mount this HD or get it to boot? Forgot to mention, the OSX
drive is partitioned as follows. OSX is on a 6 Gb partition at the beginning
of the drive with the rest of the drive as an extended partition.
