I have the same Mac as you, only difference: a third 18 gig UW-HD, I'm happy with the Pioneer so far. Works nicely with Toast Titanium but I didn't try if it boots from a CD. You'll have to download a patch (I got it from OWC IIRC)for CarbonLib so the beige sees it correctly. There is a rumour that you'll be able to flash it to two-layer writing later. Wouldn't that be great? I read a test of it in a German mag lately, they were very enthousiastic. The drive seems to read/write even to very poor quality DVD-Rs and RWs.
