You don't use an adhesive. Use a thermal paste that does nothing to adhere
the heatsink to the processor. It is meant to wick heat from the processor
into the heatsink. Get Arctic Silver. It's the best. Or use any thermal
paste you find in Radio Shack...preferably one with a silver content.
He'll need something to hold it on with, though, sounds like either the thing *was* only held on by an adhesive (like my old 486 processor) or the clip's busted and fallen right off the heatsink, I'm not sure what the G3 desktop processors look like, but I'm guessing the heatsink won't stay in place very long with just the thermal compound...
