Software Update is wonderful if you have a fast connection.  Some of us have to
download upgrades at work and bring them home, in my case on a CF card.  That's
why I suggested the stand alone 10.2.8 upgrade, but apparently you can do it
directly online which is great.

I upgraded the os once online at home and it took 6 hours.  Yuk.

One of the advantages of the software upgrade program that I discovered is that
you can do it in stages. I.e.  it will resume downloading after a disconnect
rather than having to start all over again.  You still need the same total
amount of connect time, but maybe you don't need to stay connected all night.
