Does anyone have any suggestions as to what codec or
even player to use in order to watch all (?) movies that
the PC seems to be able to show.

Like .mov, .avi is a container file format. Within it can be audio and video data in any of dozen different formats.

Some of the original Intel Indeo codecs are available from Apple. They should be listed in QuickTime's software update gizmo; if not there then via Apple's Kbase.

The MPEG-2 codec (SVCD) must be purchased from Apple (~$20).

Then there are the proprietary MS Windows Media formats. Some can be played using the Mac version of Windows Media Player. Others are only available for Windows on the PC.

Then there are the DivX and 3ivX codecs from divx.com and 3ivx.com, respectively.

may be able to see the film(s) but not hear them.

Ah. If the file is DivX, then this is a "feature" of QuickTime. It is unable to handle mp3 audio tracks within video files. Depending on which version of QuickTime and the DivX codec you have, sometimes processing the .avi file with DivX Validator works. If not, try DivX Doctor II. And if that fails, mail an oderous dropping to L'Jobs, for not fixing the bugs in QuickTime.
