>Has anyone out there had success with this scanner on OS 8.x? Sure, but I own a bunch of Nikon professional film scanners, not the Coolpix. Mine are LS-3500 (HP-IB/IEEE-4888) and LS-3510AF (SCSI-2). The same plug-in works for all.
I've used these scanners on OS 6 (IIcx, Nubus IEEE-488 card), 7 (Quadra 650, built-in SCSI), 8 (Beige G3, ditto) and 9 (ditto, ditto). >Is there any >other third-party scanning software out there? You really do need the calibration and setup Photoshop plug-in from Nikon. Most Nikon dealers have never heard of the film scanners.
