May be unrelated, but worth posting:
I recently bought a KVM switch (after discussions here :o) and it works fine in OS X, but when I boot my QuickSilver into OS 9 the keyboard doesn't work, nor does the mouse button (single button optical Pro mouse), though I can move the cursor around.
Maybe there is a restriction in OS 9 as far as the USB goes...
TIP: Get hold of a Classic/LC keyboard, the small one.

P.S. I know you were talking about a beige with a PCI card, but saw this more as a OS 9 point.
