Just a heads up for anyone looking to upgrade a 466 or 533 DA.
I picked up a processor from a QS 933 on the swap list from someone who upgraded their machine. On first glance, I thought that it would be a straight plug in. This was based on a quick look on OWCs site that showed the same model numbers for processors upgrades for everything from a Gigabit ethernet machine up to a Quick Silver. On further research, I discovered that it is no so.
All of the following is pure conjecture and (hopefully not faulty) deductive reasoning:
Starting, I BELIEVE, with the 667 DA and up, the processors needed more power than the connector could safely provide. So Apple enlarged the processor card and added a forth mounting screw. They provided 12v to this screw to add to the available power for the processor. Since this modification occurred in the middle of a model line, they did not want to have two completely different motherboards. On the new processors, three of the mounting holes match up exactly with the lower speed processors and the forth was offset to not get in the way of the heat sink.
End of pure conjecture and (hopefully not faulty) deductive reasoning.
Anyway, I tapped into the power available from one of the free drive power connectors and ran a wire to the forth mounting hole. I attached this wire with a low profile screw-WATCH OUT FOR THE MOTHERBOARD AND HEAT SINK. For experimental purposes, I tried starting up with out power on the wire. No go, no start up chime no nothing. Granted I only gave it about 10 seconds, but why risk frying a MB or processor on a test? Hooked up the wire and Bingo!! I now have a 933MHz Digital Audio machine.
The first person that I have seen that has done this used a Sawtooth G4. Because of the processor location, he had to remove one of the onboard IDE connectors, not a job for the squeamish. DA machines, and I BELIEVE gigabit ethernet machines, have the processor at the top of the case when closed, so this is not a problem.
Keep an eye out on the swap list for a 533 processor soon.
Hope this helps some people upgrade their machines and lets people who have upgraded their QS machines a way to recoup some of the cost of the upgrade.
