I tried for days to get an HP Laserjet 1012 to work under OS 9 and was unsuccessful. The overwhelming advice I got at the time was that HP drivers do not work under OS 9. I was never able to prove otherwise so I ended up getting a Brother laser printer which worked first try. Like you, I did not find HP support particularly helpful although they did try to get me to try the usual things to troubleshoot conflicts to no avail. So, I guess what I'm saying is I'm sorry that you bought the HP. If possible I would advise you to return it for something else (anything else).
