You know, there isn't much to all this. The internal speaker on these machines is turned off when you plug something into the earphone jack on the wings card. Maybe the switch in the jack is screwed up so the switch is always in the speaker off positition. I never use the internal speaker..I always use an external amp and speakers so I don't know. If you are getting sound at the earphone jack, maybe that is the problem. But it could be simpler than that. In the audio control panel in X (today I'm writing in 9 so I don't have it in front of me) there is an option to put the volume control on the menu bar, which I always select to do. Ever since I've been using X on my Beige, through all the 10.2 upgrades and including 10.3.4, that darn menu slider defaults to off. I get no sound unless I put the volume up.
