Hi all,
New to the list but not to the Mac. I bought a used G4
500 that opens some windows quickly and others, a
little slower. When I got the machine a few weeks ago,
the discrepancy was even greater and startup took a
long time. I had only had it up for 2 hrs when it
died. Did all the normal stuff-resetting PRAM,
unplugging everything, removing RAM etc-before sending
back to the seller who figured it might be the
powersupply or the motherboard. He sent it back w/o
telling me what it was. It still takes 5 minutes to
fully start up and as I said, it opens some things
just fine and others not as quickly. Certainly better
than before but still, I expect consistently faster
performance. I'm in the middle of a project for work
so I don't have the time to really look too closely
into this. What's bothering me is that this is a
replacement for an 8500 w/a Sonnet G4 card but it
seems a little slower than that. My best guess is
maybe it's the IDE drive (40g Maxtor, don't know if
it's 5400 or 7200rpm) or an Open Firmware that needs
to be updated from its current 3.26. I also read
somewhere that the ATI Rage Pro AGP card is slow at
displaying certain graphics. Sorry about the long
post. Any help is appreciated in advance. thanks
