As an Apple Certified Technician all I can tell you is to uninstall Norton
and not use it for anything.  Apple has gone so far as to release to us a
"Norton Removal Tool."  Only Certified Tech's/Mac Genius tech's can get it.
It comes along with a shell restore CD.

Norton is most likely at the root of your problems.  The ONLY non-apple
utility I recommend is Diskwarrior.
