Can I damage a USB port by trying to draw too much power?

I just picked up an iMic and plugged it in. I checked System profiler and it says that the connected devices are rated to draw 450 mA (Apple keyboard 250, Logitech mouse 100 and iMic 100). I know that the USB spec calls for 500 mA power to be provided to a port, but that does not allow for a lot of headroom for short term power demand spikes.

Is this safe on my Mac? It is a DA 533 with a 933 processor in it.

Thanks,
Len
