Q: Is there a limiting factor in using OSX on a G3?

Depends on which one you're talking about: the beige G3s, iMacs, or the Blue & WHite G3's.

The Beige G3, and the very earliest iMac series needs to have OS X installed in the first 8GB of a drive, partitioned by itself. The later iMacs and B&W G3 series does not need this.

Q: can I mount 10.3 or should I use 10.2?

10.2 is the highest version supported officially on the beige G3's, 10.3 is supported on the iMac and B&W. You can install 10.3 on a beige via XPostFacto, available free from Other World Computing <http://www.macsales.com>
