I'm getting in a little late on this one, but my experiences (PC only)
have been that the controller itself is SCSI zero on the chain, so if
you have 2 drives and one is set to zero and the other at 5, wouldn't
that cause a conflict?

If it's onboard SCSI the controller ID is 7. Typically, the startup drive is set to 0. The CDROM is usually set to 3. If there's no terminator on the SCSI ribbon, then the chain is (or should be) terminated through one of the devices. Usually it is the CDROM. There is a jumper on the back of it for this purpose.

If everything looks normal, double check to make sure that the ribbon connector on the back of the problem device is plugged in properly.
