I have an XLR8 G4 ZIF that is listed as being able to run at various
speeds. It also has a big 1 mg cache, which I think matters. It
is on an old 266 RevA G3 tower. It comes with some cache software
that seems to work OK with OS9. I have both the chip and the cache
set to conservative settings. I think it makes the machine much more
stable and smoother. In my mind the G4 doesn't make the machine
snappier than a G3--it makes it less likely to hang and I think the
cache helps out even more there. My 500mhz flower iMac is running
OSX and is probably faster in many ways, but Photoshop 7 does pretty
well--well OK, better--on the "beigeG3 with the G4" (with OS9 and
400+RAM). It might be worth $79--but I'm not sure that the cache
software works with OSX. I agree that I don't think I would pay a
whole lot more for a whole lot more mhz. The beige G3 has serious
bus bandwidth limitations compared to modern computers and you just
shouldn't pour money into them. I wouldn't get it for the purpose
of cranking up the clock. I got my ZIF the week after XLR8 bit the
dust and it was real cheap (then they went back up in price). so I
like it. If you do Photoshop 7 on the machine--yes
definitely--otherwise, well maybe.
