check ebay!  i've gotten great bargains on switches their and seen a lot more that no 
one
bid on.  you should be able to find a good brand cheap.  a lot of this stuff hits ebay
when companies upgrade to a faster or larger network or put in fiber etc. and i'm sure
some of it also comes out of companies that went belly up and schools that have 
upgraded
things.  of course if you want a gigabit fiber switch you'll probably have to buy it 
new
or watch ebay for awhile, but everything comes up on ebay eventually (and i purchased 
some
pretty odd industrial stuff on ebay that's hard to find anywhere else, and bought it 
cheap!).

best to get one bigger than you need now, and one with all 10/100 ports and possibly a 
few
gigabit ports depending on what kind of machines you'll be running, what kind of net
connection you have, and how often you need to mover files around or work on files or 
use
apps that are on other machines on your network.
