How do I do this ?
With OS X, in your utilities folder, inside the applications folder. Open "Network Utility" You'll find a panel labeled "ping" You can control the number of pings and the duration.

Can this be done automatically ?

Can the router be set to send out pings? I know mine pings back to the computer.
