Have you ever booted from a CD on this machine? Several years ago when I got
my iMac I had a similar problem. It ended up being a bad ROM in the CD
drive. It worked fine, it just wasn't bootable. Fortunately the machine was
still under warranty, and Apple replaced the drive.
