I am writing this from work and my home ADSL connection is seemingly down, but it all started in a strange way.
First I couldn't connect using my D-link DI 704-P router, only if I connected directly to the ADSL modem, but now I cannot connect using either.
Just strange that it should go in steps.
The modem shows the two LEDs it should, so I doubt it's my ISP (though I am currently holding in a queue to check), and when I get home I will check using my work PowerBook and a different cable.
Anyone have any similar experience or suggestion ???
Your on the right track, swapping out pieces with known working pieces (specifically the computer). Make sure you include the cables in that testing.
There are the obvious things, power cycling the modem and restarting the computer. In fact I've taken to recommending shutting down the computer and starting up again. The newer Macs and all laptops have power management features that sometimes have troubles. A shutdown will clear it whereas a restart wouldn't. In some cases I had to pull the plug on an iMac to clear it. Specific things are the modem, harddrive and wireless card. It isn't that there is anything wrong with the part, it's just that the power manager isn't turning it on.
Unfortunately in this situation the modem usually isn't swapable and the broadband connection itself isn't either.
One thing to try is if while talking to the ISPs tech support and they say they can see your modem try pulling the power from it and see if they still can see it. I had one case where the phone company kept saying they could see a POTS connection but the line was dead. A crew (there was one working up on the pole) had swapped lines and the connection they were seeing was to some other house. They insisted it was to the right location but there just isn't anything to let them know that. If the ISP can see the modem when it's on and can't when it's off it's a pretty good indication they are really seeing YOUR modem.
