Ah, Hah! This says it only applies to ATA drives. My 18 GB seagate is a SCSI. However, it says rather cautiously, " SCSI drives *may* not be affected regardless of their storage capacity."
Doncha love it when they add squirm room to their answers. :\
Bottom line: Create the partition. Launch the OS Installer. If it lets you select the partition, then life is good. If not, then you know you have the problem. :)
