I've got this beige G3 tower that I want to make my main Mac. Presently I use a G3-upgraded 7600 hybrid, with Fast SCSI drives.
First I need memory. Max it out. OWC has a very nice price on their
memory (less than $40 a pop) - is this acceptable? ( http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?modelY&type)
Yes. Also check Data Memory Systems <http://www.datamem.com> I like them too for memory.
It's a 266MHz tower with a 512k L2 backside cache. It looks like one should be able to get a 500MHz G4 chip for around $100 or so. Anything to avoid? Prioritize?
I've got OWC's G4/450 upgrade, it's been 'berry berry good to me'.
I am planning to take my hybrid's SCSI card and fast drives and put it in the device - the current G3 tower unit has a fast scsi card running (with some difficulty at start-up) only 7600rpm IBM SCSI drives, so I'll improve that - after I've upgraded the memory and processor. So I don't care about the lack of an IDE slave capacity.
That only applies if it's the first-gen G3's.
Question: The CD-ROM appears to be IDE. Is there any problem having an IDE CD but with the system running on Fast-SCSI hard drives?
None whatsover.
I plan to put OS X on this Mac, after the G4. Does OS X run OK on Fast SCSI drives? Or should I avoid OS X and go with Yellow Dog Linux?
OS X runs fine on one of these machines, it's officially supported up to 10.2, and lots of people have gotten 10.3 running with XPostFacto.
Only go for YDL if you really want to play with Linux, imo.
