given the rather limited choices, that really wouldn't make much difference in the real
world. if this were a democracy, of course it would, if it were a "representative"
government in terms of the people, it might, since it's a highly corrupt 2 party system
where money votes it's not likely to make much. not that i know of anything better,
but
let's not delude ourselves. after all, even the electoral college was intended to
prevent
the "wrong" person being elected if the "public" went nuts, it's intended to allow
those
already in power to make that decision, guided by the people's vote, though it is being
slowly reformed more or less.

administrative law is even more indirect than that, and farther from being the people's
servant. after all who do you know who thinks people approving drugs at the fda
should be
allowed to be paid "consultants" for drug companies at the same time, or for the fcc
to be
doing some of the highly questionable things they've been doing (besides delaying hdtv
for
over a decade because industry was fighting over "spectrum"). I vote diligently (if
you
don't vote, you have no business complaining) and it rarely if ever makes a significant
difference, particularly now that i'm in wyoming. at best, you can slightly influence
companies by voting with your dollars, just as they influence government.

as for the direct tv case, i believe it was on slash dot (which i should visit more
often,
perhaps if and when i get a cable modem), i'm sorry i don't have a url handy, doubtless
google could find it quickly.

This is no different than what happens at the skull and bones initiation and we're
going
to ruin
people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are
going to
really hammer them because they had a good time. You know, these people are being
fired at every
day. I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of
emotional release?
You ever heard of need to blow some steam off?" Rush Limbaugh, Talking about torture,
we
can only
hope our enemies actually follow the Geneva conventions, though we've not given them
any
reason to.
