Just how exciting is blowing an ADB port? Are the effects, say, a simple
loud "snap" and maybe a faint whiff of smoke or are we talking about a
full-blown flames-belching-from-the-box-type scenario?

Actually, less than that, all that happens is your ADB port goes dead, necessitating logic board replacement.
