FYI, when I recently worked with an "authorized Apple technician" he recommended that I not partition hard drives with OS X, since the OS needs "room to roam" and he saw no benefit for me or the 'puter with partitioning.

1. <And hopefully he queried you as to your needs and probable uses before making that recommendation.>
Yes, the Apple tech did understand my needs/uses, but he made the statement that he wouldn't partition a drive on an OS X system as a pretty flat, general suggestion. Granted, we weren't discussing systems like beige G3s that have a specific requirement for partitioning.
2. <Personally I'm pretty anal retentive when it comes to my computer and how my data is stored.. So partitions are a must.>
I'm pretty anal, too, and ever since my Quadra 800 have always had a second drive, usually external, for backing up my data. Obviously, an external is also more portable, should I need to physically move lots of files--or grab in case of a fire, etc.
3. <The most important aspect in the decision would be how much open space do you have left for OS X if you do partition the drive.>
Sure, space remaining is certainly a consideration, but less so as drive sizes go up and prices go down. My G5 came with 160 GB, and I splurged on an external 160 GB Firewire 800/400/USB2 that should be useful for years, and with my next (?) system. "Sure, honey, I really, really need it!" He he.
