If one anticipates that one might need 2 GB memory in an iMac for some project in a year or two, I wonder if it would make sense to get a matched pair of 1GB sticks now, since it would probably be impossible to find a RAM stick in the future that completely matches one bought today.

If you have matched modules on the iMac G5 memory controller, it acts as one 128bit controller. With mismatched sticks, it acts as two separate 64bit controllers. Dunno how much real-world difference that makes.
