<Hi. I am planning to get a new mac over thanksgiving weekend. I have
a few questions.

First, does the Apple Store do any thanksgiving promos?

My computing uses are for video editing, photoshop 8,
macromedia suite mx 2004 and running http, ftp, imap and smtp
servers. What should i get. 20 inch G5 imac, dual 2.0 ghz tower or a
dual 2.5 ghz tower.>

If these are the kinds of projects you do, and that's the kind of budget
you have, where you can consider buying a beautiful brand new G5 --
frighteningly but wonderfully huge from my standpoint -- if I were you
I'd go all out and buy the whole hog (the 2.5 tower). This assuming space
on your desk or wherever you use your computer for a tower (to wit: the
reason why I wanted and bought a G3 of the desktop persuasion rather than
a tower was precisely for space considerations). Here's why I'd get the
2.5 if I were you:

I can't tell you how many posts I've seen on these LEM lists -- I sub to
this list and the Powerbook List now, and I also used to sub to the PCI
List and I've even been on the Swap List -- from people posting about
processor upgrades; where to get them, how much they cost, how to install
them, how to troubleshoot them and so on. Everybody wants more and
better, and from what you say it sounds to me like you're going to be
running a lot of computer intensive applications and doing a good deal of
multitasking. Yeah, better processors than this will no doubt be released
in the future, but if you can afford even a 2.0, can a 2.5 be that much
more? Especially if it keeps you from having to upgrade for awhile? So if
I were you, I'd get the Mac with the best processor you can to start off
with, even if it doesn't come with the monitor of your dreams. Or maybe
you can negotiate with the salesperson concerning the monitor; in any
case, you can always buy another, bigger monitor another time, right? And
you can probably find those cheap and used, which I'll bet won't be the
case with the 2.5 even if Apple does run some kind of Thanksgiving
holiday special sale (sorry, I don't know if they'll be doing this).

My goodness. Have fun with that thing!! :-)
