Yes, I installed the Apple DVD-Player from the original Panther Installer discs using Pacifist. When I tried to update the Player with the DVD-Player Update from Apple it no longer worked. So I went back to the original DVD-Player from the OSX 10.3 installer.
It works, but barely. It's so choppy that watching a film with some action or panning scenes is not enjoyable at all.
I'll have to boot into OS9 for watching DVDs then. The hacked Apple DVD-Player ver. 2.7 works flawlessly but I'd like to stay in OSX ...
Maybe I'll try a faster CPU. Does the Apple DVD-Player for OSX benefit from the AltiVec-engine so a G4 would make sense?
It's been awhile, but that is correct. On that older iMac you need the 2.7 player and watch DVD's in OS 9. We went through the same with our old Summer 2000 iMac. Apple has information on this issue in the KB and there is an extensive discussion in the forums at OS 9 Forever. The bottom line was the OS X DVD player requires the presence of onboard firewire. Some issue with the ROM. Even though we ran Panther on the old iMac, had 1GB of RAM etc.. DVD watching was an OS 9 activity.
I cannot give you all the details as we sold that machine months ago, but the issue is well discussed on the internet.
