The confusion here is the term G3 I think. 9.1 was the last version of OS 9 that ran on the older unsupported Mac's including the first of the G3's, all the clones, upgraded 9500, 9600's etc. To use 9.2 and up on these machine requires a hack. ( see http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/OS9Helper/Framework.cfm?topic=32 ). Other than that there is no reason to not apply the free upgrade to 9.2.2 if already have 9 on your Mac.
9.1 or 9.2 in whatever variant will all serve well for Classic. The few times I ever boot straight into OS 9 I don't notice any issues with 9.2.2 versus 9.2.1 or earlier, but I don't use OS 9 on a regular basis. Someone who does may be able to comment if there are any day to day benefits/drawbacks to one flavor of OS9 versus another.
