Greg Burkman writes, <(Ican't overemphasize the importance of RELIABLE BACKUPS OF FILES THAT CAN RUN ON APPLICATIONS THAT CAN RUN FROM EXTERNAL MEDIA AND BACKUPS OF APPLICATIONS THAT CAN RUN ON YOUR MACHINE), and once you've saved all your critical data that run under each version of the application _on external media_ (I can't state that point strongly enough), and you're convinced all of this stuff is saved on... DUM, DAH, DUM: _external media_ (I use CDs, never Zip disks for serious stuff -- and I'd try to run all my critical files from CD on another Mac just to be sure), by golly, then you've made backups of all the stuff you should have been saving all along, Be sure to check that the CDs are readable by your Mac and any Mac and PC, and double-check, and if you're satisfied, you're good to go and may whomever bless. You've got a back-up.>
Oh, goodness, yes. As one who not too long ago suffered a major "disaster" on account of my admittedly imbecilic act of not getting an external backup system online soon enough -- try losing three weeks worth of writing, numerous critical scenes, on a story you've been working on for seven or eight months -- I have to agree with you wholeheartedly. Yes, my backup system is up and running and used constantly by this time. Better late than never, I guess. But I feel a whole lot better to have it. If my Mac exploded right this minute, all my critical data (including the painfully made restoration of what I lost in the aforementioned disaster) and applications are on Zip disks, with the exception of applications I already had on CDs and could reinstall that way if I had to. CDs as backups are all well and good, and that was my original hope because you can put more data on a CD than on a Zip disk, but since I wasn't ever able to get the CDRW and Toast thing up and running, I went with a Zip drive (my problem was waiting too long to unhook the CDRW and hook up the Zip drive -- to be honest, I COULD have prevented that disaster, sheeesh!). What I'd like to know is why you would otherwise stress CDs over Zip disks as the media upon which to make external backups. ~Yersinia. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
