The question is:
Would it do any good to put panther on my beige desktop? (It's got Jaguar right now)
It has a Sonnet G3 500 on it, 768mB, a Sonnet IDE card, and a USB card.
The guy at the Mac Store said Panther won't go on any machine that doesn't have built-in USB.
Is this true? And... if it's true, is there anyone yet who makes a pre-install program that will go around that limitation, just like the people who make programs that you can use to make Old World Macs run Jaguar?
Actually, the very same people. XPostFacto, from OWC, in their tech section.
That said, I've tried three times on my system (which runs 10.2.8 quite happily) and each time it was a miserable failure. Mine is pretty maxed out: G3 DT revC, 768 megs, G4, DVD-R/RW, ATI Radeon 7000 video, Siig ATA card, FW/USB card.
It'll boot to the gray slash 'this won't work' screen, then my OS X installation is hosed.
I'm very glad I've kept one external SCSI disk with a known good OS9 on it, because each time that's been the only drive it reliably boots from after the attempt.
Twice I've had to do an archive&reinstall of 10.2 to get back to a functional system.
If I wasn't trying to upgrade a production system, I'd probably strip everything out, nuke&pave and bang on it until I got it working, but while Panther is nice (I use it at work) and I'd love to get it working here, it's going to have to wait for new hardware for my part, I think.
