definitely, definitely get yourself a good hardware firewall. this avoids flaws in the os being a problem, though if you are running os x i'd still use it's software firewall as well.
things have really, really gotten nasty out there in the last year in terms of incursion attempts, i log an obscene number of them on my software firewall using dialup, enough that i'm thinking of a hardware firewall even at 28K because they do cause problems even when they don't get in, like interrupting page loading even with the software firewall in place. that and i'll hopefully be doing dsl soon, that or running into the night screaming as things are just getting too slow, though largely due to the huge traffic volume from incursion attempts which use bandwidth even when they don't get in! a couple of years ago i would have said the software firewall was enough, but not now and not with os x being based on bsd and having many of the same holes and unix type systems becoming more popular targets. that is if you do anything more than play online games and email that you don't need to be private, and certainly if you shop online or have "sensitive" information on your' machine.
