I just bought this iBook about 2 weeks ago at my local Apple Store for $999.00. I also added a 512 RAM stick which was another $200.00. MacMall is offering the same plus free RAM upgrades and a free printer (after rebates)....so it all comes out to about the same. I believe MacWarehouse is offering similar. I chose the Apple Store because I like to get my stuff immediately without waiting for delivery.
This is a 12 inch 1.2 gig iBook with 768 RAM and a 30 gig hard drive. I LOVE IT! It also has 1 firewire 400 port and 2 USB 2.0 ports. The sound isn't anywhere as good as what I have on my G5 iMac but if you connect headphones, it's quite good. The external speakers leave a LOT to be desired. I also use Airport Express and you can play iTunes over your home stereo (quite nice).
I just bought my 14" iBook, also at an Apple store. I put in a 1Gb RAM upgrade for $213. I considered just buying a 512Mb module but figured that I'd eventually go for 1Gb (1.25Gb total) and that it would end up costing me about as much.
As far as the free printer, my experience is you usually over pay for those. My mom got one and it only came with the black cartridge. So her "free" printer already cost her the price of a color cartridge. On top of that the printer is pretty crappy.
Overall the best discount you can get is the educational discount but it still isn't a lot. The only other way to go cheaper is a discontinued model but those are catch as catch can.
