i'm thinking of getting a cable/dsl router/switcher.
either a belkin or linksys....
but i've read a lot of reviews about problems with routers and little to no support for mac users from the manufacturers.
can anyone recommend a good 4 port router for a g4 and g3s?
thanks
Hi Ray,
I have Netgear routers and switches on my network, and have hadn't too many problems with them. When I did, I found a phone call was required, as they don't seem to respond to e-mail. The specific models I have are: the routers are models RP614, and the switches are FS608 [8 ports] and FS605. [5 ports].
Although the switches are no problem, the router like so many is configured through a web page interface.
My present problems are that I can't get the e-mail notification feature to work, and, the latest flash upgrade wont successfully decompress. I'd like to do this so that I can upgrade the features on the router, as should be apparent in the web interface for configuring it.
Neither for these I consider to be truly pressing issues, so I've yet to be bothered to phone Netgear in order to solve these problems.
When shopping for them a few years back, the problem I found was that the Linksys routers required you to run certain software, only Windoz based, in order to configure the router. Whereas the Netgear router supports Windoz, Linux and the Mac OS.
Have a look at Netgear.com for more on these and other networking hardware. My understanding is that Netgear is owned by 3com, another large computer networking company. By taking a look at the Netgear site, it seems to me they are much more 'in the know' about networking then is Linksys.
So despite my relatively minor problems with this router, I'd still recommend the Netgear networking hardware.
In the end, and despite having what I hope is Netgears more forward looking view of computer networking, all the various brands of small 4 port routers are pretty much the same; because of the industry standards.
However, and at the risk of contradicting myself, I've heard bad things about the SMC brand, and a few other brands. Beyond basic configuration problems, I'm not aware of specific problems with the SMC hardware.
Hope this helps,
Bill --
