MIDI files are not like digital sound sample files, such as aiffs, mp3s,
wavs, etc. They are, as has already been noted, collections of notes in
various parts, somewhat like a musical score, rather than a CD, or (for
those of us who remember the days) records on vinyl. They have to be
"played" by a program like Player Pro (do a Google) before you can actually
hear anything from them.

Programs like Logic or ProTools can also "play" them into a "mixdown" on
disk, & save that into a digital sample file, like an mp3. Evidently QT Pro
can't, or you haven't found the way, if it exists. I'm afraid I can't help
you with that program. There are free versions of Logic & ProTools (Google
these, too.)
