I am always amazed at how l-o-n-g it takes *any* Windows OS to install on *any* (fast or slow) PC. Other PC'rs at school express amazement at the ease of installing a new Mac OS. One of our new G5s had a kernel corruption that was easily fixable by a fresh install (over the OEM install) of Panther - no problem, since none of our software had yet been installed. A student helper (PC'r) said "oh, that'll take a while!" went for a quick drink, when he was back I was done - "wow" was his only remark > I have only begun to tinker with my machine, > and I find myself reminding myself that this is not a PC. Unfortunately, I > have been a Windows user for about 6 years and I am in that mindset and that > will take some work to change. Worth the effort > The only question I have right now is that I > bought my Mac used from my college and wonder if I need to register it with > Apple. Only if there was a specifically-stated Apple Care plan still in place and transferable. Otherwise, if the unit is more than a year old (*most* likely w/ an educational sale of used units), it isn't covered (by all means register any new OS you buy- it gives you 90 days of free support to help get you going). Not to worry; comparably, you'll find Macs pretty easy to fix, including (or, especially) software issues. And always throw an APB out to the LEM swap list for good prices on used replacement components. > If so, are applications available for download for free from Apple? Some; the iLife series is free (except for Garage Band); QT is free with a modest price for the full version. But check the educational store - being a member of an educational community, you have access to good discounts on software from Apple and Microsoft, among others. Check it out. Also, imho, you'll find the fare in the shareware world of better quality than comparable elements in the PC world; as you may know, there is a LOT of shareware for PCs, but so much of it is poorly-tested crap. Generally, independent developers for Macs know that there is a smaller, pickier market for Mac, with a (generally) more savvy clientele to impress - so their offerings had better work. > Also, when installing the OS, I got an error concerning Airport....it > wouldn't install that but allowed me to bypass it. Wil this pose any > problem? Do you *have* an Airport card installed in your unit? It is common for Apple OS installers to not install appropriate OS components if the needed hardware is not present - if you later on add an Airport card, then the OS would "see" it and your issue would be null. > If I weren't so bogged down with classes and work, I might find > this stuff out on my own, but time is limited right now. Good luck with your new Mac, and your classes! Best regards, Dana -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
