Is there no way to get SMART messages or logs on a Mac?
Yes, in OS X. Disk Utility has SMART stuff in it, at least in Panther. It's limited to saying either 'Verified' or 'About to fail', and there could well be some command-line app that does more or accesses the logs.
Is that the "Verify Disk" button at the bottom right of the Disk Utility window?
No, it's beneath that in the text. 'Verify disk' is equivalent to the old Disk First Aid's 'Check Disk', 'Repair' is the same as DFA's 'Repair Disk' button.
