I 'm thinking of buying a Digital camera there are so many out there so I thought I would ask the list for there recommendations I need it to be able to take photos inside and when you print them out the look good I wold like to spend around 300 to 500

I have a Konica Minolta DiMage A2 and cannot recommend it. It has much trouble with exposures (on any program setting it tends to overexpose severely on the lighter bits), cannot focus in anything other than good lighting; the manual focus is useless and resolution, despite being a claimed 8mpx, is poor. The old 1.3mpx Sony Mavica FD88 I used to use (until the floppy drive failed) took sharper images in poorer light (eg indoors, or outdoors in bright sunlight)... without any exposure problems.
The A2 however does however have good battery life!
In my opinion anything over 3 megapixel is a waste of money if you're not printing larger that 8 X 10 or the occasional 11 X 14. My bet is that you won't even choose 3mpx for most of your shots, for speed and easy storage. Digital photography is so easy and the memory cards store so many shots per shoot that you quickly end up with hundreds of photos on your hard drives. iTunes is a good organizer.
I agree entirely. I only bought an 8mpx so that I can take images of small specimens. And that doesn't seem to work satisfactorily... shoulda bought an SLR.
My rec would be to try a few out, specifically to see how long it takes to write to the storage media, and how quickly the camera recovers to take another pic. I have a Minolta Dimage that takes forever to write to the SD storage, and I'm wondering if it's the type of SD card I have or the camera itself.
My A2 seems to write quickly enough, but I'm using a 4.0gb microdrive rather than a card. Hitachi microdrives are robust (unlike the original IBM microdrives) and far cheaper than card of similar density. Avoid the other microdrives, as they can refuse to work with some cameras (and there's no way to tell until you buy and try).
Point 3: Batteries. Many good and bad arguments all over the place. Me? I prefer flexibility in my 'accessories', so I decided in advance that I'd get a camera that could use batteries (and removable media) that I can use elsewhere. Old-fashioned alkalines (when desparate). Many good cameras can use NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride (?)) rechargables...and some rechargers can recharge both NiMH *and* alkalines.
Do NOT try to recharge alkaline batteries! Only NiMh, Ni-Cd and lithium-ion batteries are rechargable.
Obviously AA batteries have the advantage of easy & economical replacement, but some cameras take only specific-fit plastic-cased batteries, as does the A2. It MAY be possible to get adaptors which you can fit with AAs then plug into the camera in place of the standard battery; my Gyration wireless mouse has this option, but I confess that I've never heard of this for cameras.
A friend has a Nikon SLR digital and it is so quick, it's incredible. 'Course the price is incredible too. Check out Sony and their various cybershots, I think that's what they call them. They use XD media but I've seen that they are fast and very well priced. Depending on the megapixels you get, you'll need media also. 256 megs cost about 35 bucks here in Toronto so that or more is now a good deal. Figure 50 bucks for NiMh batteries and charger.
These should come with the camera... but get an extra battery. Olympus and Canon at least are making lithium-ion batteries under license from Sony.
Personally, I wouldn't go beyond 3 or 4 megapixels. I won't print them, that's for sure and anything you get at 3-500, with more megapixels is probably going to be lacking in something else.
I think the lower-level SLRs are barely more than the A2 price... check out <www.bizrate.com> for the cheapest US prices. You can see reviews there too.
