Basically, anything in the Users/Your User Name area belongs to you and you can delete as you like. Anything in the /Library or /System folders are to be avoided as they are files that the OS uses. Not that you can't add or delete files from /Library/Desktop Pictures/, I do all the time but if you have the slightest doubt here is a good way to find out. Launch the terminal application located in /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and at the user prompt, type 'ls -al'...you will see a column in the output listing the owner. If the owner is anything but your user name, leave it alone.
Think about reading a few books on the unix version included in OS X....there are a couple of good ones by O'Reilley that are not VOLUMES thick and easy to read and understand. They also teach you a bit of interesting things.
Have fun and be safe. I've been using OS X since 10.1 and learn something new about it everyday. I do not claim to be an expert by any means! But I have fun finding out about the various things this super OS can do.

Though I am pretty proficient and comfortable erasing and doing things in OS

information about what things are, i.e. what names mean, when I open the
system or other folders.

Exterminate all rational thought.
