Inform your game crazy son he needs to read up on what he's doing. If he really wants to be competitive, he needs to have a solid grasp of networking fundamentals. At it's lowest, 802.11b is 11mb/sec assuming a good connection, your cable connection, assuming is DOCSIS based, can theoretically stuff 54mb/sec down that pipe, but you certainly don't have unrestricted cable. Find out what your cable co tiers your bandwidth at, if it's less than 11mb/sec, that second connection isn't helping at all.
In the end, for gaming, its not bandwidth that matters anyways. Once you clear the 256kb/sec barrier up and down, additional bandwidth doesn't appreciably improve game play. Its LATENCY that matters. If the latency on your cable segment is bad, adding a second modem won't improve things. If the latency on your wireless segment is bad, find the cause and fix it.
Now, what he MAY be complaining about is being behind a WIFI router's NAT and Firewall, which won't break gaming (It will stop him from hosting games.) it will break or slow down other popular bandwidth hungry apps, mainly p2p software... It also makes it easier for mom and dad to monitor and restrict access. I'd find out exactly what he's doing myself. : )
