I'm not 100% sure, but it seems like if you just click on the window (or maybe you have to click on the file itself). I often have the view sorted by "date modified" so as to see my most recently changed files first--sometimes I noticed what you have observed--that it doesn't always update immediately. I think it matters which window is active (on top), whether the change was a "save" or a "save as", and probably what the app does when it saves.

But I'm just guessing--it sure seems like when I click on a file in a non-updated window, it updates.

FWIW.

How do you refresh the file sizes in Mac OS X 10.3?

I open a new finder window and the file size is displayed, along with the
name of the file and the modification date. The size of the file sometimes
automatically changes and sometimes it does not. Is there a command to force
a refresh.

In windows you press F5 to force a refresh.

I work with a lot of large files and I use the file size as an indicator of
the job completion.
