Seriously, I have done it in the past to with both Darwin and full OS X and you're right about the slowness: the Aqua UI is just too much for an older 9500, even at 233 MHz. But as a UN*X system, you get access to all the ongoing development in Darwin and the ports collection(s) that are coming along. The UN*X stuff adds so much to what the Mac already offered.

At the moment, I am more concerned with keeping a B&W/Yosemite up to date: still looking for a reliable and inexpensive ATA card (I have a Rev 1 that only groks one disk). But the old 9500 could see some service if I need a disk farm or something.
