You just answered your own question. OS X loves RAM. We ran Panther on the exact same iMac you're describing, and it was fair with 256 MB, all right with 512 MB, but ran very nicely with the RAM maxed out at 1024 MB. Take it to 512 and you will notice a big difference. The nice thing is Apple never made a computer where it is easier to change the RAM than the slot loaders. <G>
