Connect both via ethernet. Set up the system connected to the phone line to share internet connection (System Prefs > Sharing) set up other mac to use Ethernet for internet and get address from server.
Voila. Works like a charm; I've done it with my 540c and my desktop at home.
But the ISP will see and charge me tons of money. I was told i needed a router.
