That's actually not at all true. It's a common misconception. Apple was sitting on millions in liquid capital at that time and was never in any danger of going under... Steve helped out a lot by bringing the iMac and iPod into the fray and by developing Mac OS X (which I see as a continuation of his NeXT operating system endeavors) but Apple was never going to go anywhere.
