I have a few older macs [G3 blue, G3 iMac, G4 iMac, awesome LC collection!] but quite frankly for $639.00 CDN for the cheapest Mac mini, I would not consider spending much upgrading any of them. The Mac mini is an outstanding value no matter how you look at it.
I think Apple has hit the nail firmly on the head with this product and they will sell all they can make.
No, there's no monitor, mouse or keyboard [but am I the only guy who remembers when macs only came as a 'CPU' with a mouse only - circa early 90's?] but for someone considering switching from a PC, and I know a few of them...it's perfect. Unlike a cheap Dell which I think is the natural competitor for this machine, it has a full software load which makes it easy to switch. Give 'em the software they don't have and leave off the peripherals which they probably already own. Smart thinking. I showed pictures of the Mac mini in my office and two of my coworkers [PC users both] immediately phoned the local Apple vendor to ask about delivery dates.
I paid $1600.00 just over a year ago for a g4 iMac, and a Mac mini is 2X the computer in terms of processor and DVD drive speed for half the money.
I want one.
My opinion anyway.

Isn't that comparable to a (PC 486? Or being generous an early Pentium I?).

Just had to chime in on this one. The 604e was the rough equiv to a PII, doubling its clock speed. So if you had a PowerMac 7300/200, that was roughly equivalent to a PII 400. (Ah the days of the MHz Myth) The 68040 was the equiv to the 486, and the 601 was the rough equiv to a Pentium I (minus the math problems).

YMMV,
