Take the faceplate off the remote. You will note that what is behind the buttons is a rubber slab. On this rubber "slab" are little dots of metal. Clean (remove oxidation from) the top surfaces of these dots with a No. 2 pencil eraser (or a white plastic film eraser). Also erase (clean) the contacts on the remote where they touch. It doesn't take much to remove this oxide so be gentle. It should work okay after that.
