I've had my MDD 2x1GHz FW400 (64MB video) packed away
while I've been moving things around, in the meantime I've sold
the Sony 19" monitor I used with the Mac.

Now I went to use it to retrieve some files, grabbed the first
monitor to hand, a 15" Sony (all CRTs) but it was "out of
scan range", and I automatically presumed that the previously
used resolution was too high so I switched to my Formac 20"
(Trinitron too) but that won't show anything either. This
monitor does not show a message but it is older.

The Mac starts up fine and I can switch it off with Power Key-Return
so it's starting up fine, but no video...

Any ideas ???

Is there any way in which to force the resolution down, though
I would have thought that it would sense the monitor and lower
it automatically.

I have tried starting from the OS X CD without joy.

Try booting holding down the Command-Option-P-R keys to clear the PRAM memory. Also, what type of video cable are you using to connect your monitor up? All modern monitors report their available resolutions, and Macs honor that, so I'm confused at to how you are getting out of range issues. To be fair, I have seen this occasionally on my PM 9600/G3/500 running OS X 10.3.3-3.6 but since upgrading to 10.3.7 the problem has disappeared. I was always able to reboot by waiting for the boot to complete, pressing the power, then 'R', then return. I never had it boot twice in a row into the wrong resolution.
