I am having problems with Stuffit Expander. No matter how I open it (double clicking on it, double clicking on the latest Mozilla build ending in .gz, dragging a .gz file onto it) it just sits there following through on it's New Years resolution to get more exercise. In other words, it just bounces in the dock, eventually saying application not responding until I force quit it.

I was running 8.0.2, but once this problem started I downloaded the latest version, 9.0.1 and still have the same problem. I have trashed all Stuffit preferences and repaired permissions and neither helped. It has not created a new preference file yet.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I just solved my own problem. It appears that there is an issue with Stuffit 9.0.1 and version checking where stuffit takes a VERY long time to start up. I found this on the xlr8yourmac site and it works like a charm. The old version 8.?) would bounce 4-5 before launching. 9.0.1 would bounce forever (1 minute!!!). Since I did the following, it opens in ONE bounce.

Reader Tips for disabling Stuffit Version checking from Terminal - Yesterday's news had comments on problems getting Stuffit apps to run (very very long delay which I determined to be due to version checking - perhaps a temporary issue with a server). A reader replied to that post with a note on disabling version checking from the terminal. (I've not tried this since I've already disabled it in the apps prefs.)

" Hi Mike, It's me again. :)
With these commands, you can disable the version checking of the StuffIt apps in the terminal:
defaults write com.stuffit.Expander allowVersionChecking -bool false
defaults write com.stuffit.DropStuff allowVersionChecking -bool false
defaults write com.stuffit.DropZip allowVersionChecking -bool false
defaults write com.stuffit.DropTar allowVersionChecking -bool false

Hope that helps someone.
