Until Apple comes out with the dual G5 3GHz tower there isn't any Mac that has the equivalent expandability.
Because the current Dual 2.5 G5's are what? Chopped liver?
As for your reception....you were the one making the absurd (and trollish) comments about how your 9500 was as good or better than the Mini.
That is patent and demonstrable balderdash.
I think maybe the nub of his gist:
I will buy a new Apple computer when Apple offers the dual G5 3GHz tower hopefully later this year. At any price it will be a better buy and offer far more upgrade opportunities than any Mini. Also, the dual G5 3 GHz will offer far longer useful upgradeable life making it a far better buy.
seems to be that the Mac mini is, essentially, a throwaway box, and therefore inferior. He seems to favor something with a longer product life. He likes his 9500 because it is still very expandable. We won't go into that wacky "point of diminshing returns."
The problem here is "comparing Apples to Apples" (okay, shoot me).
He's values a machine that will last a while and is willing to pay a higher price for that longevity. It's like buying any other appliance: sure, I can spend $200 on a Kitchen Aid blender, but perhaps a $50 El Cheapo brand will meet my current, basic needs. Will it last as long/be as capable as the Kitchen AId? No...but for $50, I get the basics and can just toss it after a couple of years.
I understand what he's getting at, but the statement of the G5 being a "better buy" is a personal judgment call. It _is_ a better buy for people who are willing to pay 3x the price of a mini for a system that will last longer. Apple, however, is gambling that there are a lot of folks who will favor the El Cheapo approach.
Me? I'm waiting for the day when my local 7-11 carries actual throwaway computers. Say, something in the $60 range that you can use until you get "tired of the color," then toss.
Best,
James
Well James!
I had no idea that you favoured the throw away mentality - I'm quite disappointed in your attitude to the limited resources that this planet has :) I thought you'd be in the vanguard pushing Apple toward high efficiency and recycling!
Best wishes
James
